What to look for when buying a Time Trial/Triathlon Bike

How to choose a triathlon bike and what you should look for.

The first thing you need to do is decide on a budget. How much you can afford on a new bike. If you are just starting out, I wouldn't go above $2,000. You can find many great bikes for less than that, but once you become more familiar with a bike you want to buy a good bike and not have any regrets. What exactly do you want to do with your new bike? (Compete in iron-mans, local races, just looking for a quick road bike, etc.)

For more information, full detailed reviews on bikes and much more, please check out my site Tri Bike Reviews.

  • What type of terrain will you be riding on? (Pavement, hills, mountains, etc.?)
  • On to the actual bike and parts... How many gears do you want to have? -This also depends on where you will be riding. Most people will only need up to a 20 speed bike, as most people will be riding on pavement.
  • Frame. aluminum or Carbon? -This will reflect heavily on the price. Elite riders will want carbon because it's lighter, faster and stronger than aluminum. Most weekend warriors will not even notice a difference and the new models with aluminum frames are already super light and strong.

  • Bars - Aero (flat) or regular?

  • Saddles - You can go with comfort, but in a triathlon, it's all about speed. The stock saddle will do fine.

  • Pedals and shoes. For triathlons, you should go with the clip in pedals and racing shoes.

  • Wheels -These can get expensive, so be careful when choosing.
